I just saw the US CD single of "World" over the weekend, and unless Qwest is planning on releasing singles out of order (pardon the pun), there likely won't be a formal US release of RIAD. Furthermore, if memory serves, the "World" single even had a "Single Version" of RIAD on it. BTW, I picked up a copy of the US promo 2X12" of "World." I'll submit the details w/r/t catalog number and whatever else to Rich/Dennis (that is, if you don't already have it), but here's the track listing: Disc 1/Side A: Perfecto Mix Brothers dubstrumental Side B: Pharmacy dub Album version Disc 2/Side A: Brothers in Rhythm mix Sexy Disco dub mix Side B: World in Action mix Radio edit I believe the shop where I picked this up might still have a few copies left, so if anyone's interested, I *may* be able to pick up a couple more, assuming they're still available by the time I make it back. Is there something more than tracks from Brotherhood and Technique? Perhaps some interesting mix versions of originals? Album seemed quite expensive at local record store, the vinyl was 110 finnish marks which is about 20-25 US dollars. Or should I put my money on some other NO album? I found this band just a few months ago and just have those two albums(which are excellent). All this talk of 808 State reminded me of something: does anyone remember the song played during the closing credits of MTV's House of Style "swimsuit edition?" You know, the one with the stills of Niki Taylor slinkin' around. The song featured Bjork, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't Sugarcubes stuff - maybe 808 State (it wasn't Ooops or Qmart) ? It's hard to explain, but I'm sure anyone who heard it would remember. What a great tune - too bad no one credited the responsible band. ___ ___ \ | | Joseph Rizzo _ _/ aka jrrst12+@pitt.edu | \ or JRRST12@vms.cis.pitt.edu ____/ __\ "Just one of an infinite number of monkeys." ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Aug 93 11:22:49 CDT From: ctorres@merle.acns.nwu.edu To: ceremony@frontios.niagara.edu Subject: Archives Message-Id: <9308051622.AA03829@merle.acns.nwu.edu> Can someone please send me some info or instructions on how to access the music archives and what bands it contains? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Aug 93 10:25:53 PDT From: mw@sybase.com (Michael Wertheim) To: ceremony@iastate.edu Subject: Razormaid mixes Message-Id: <9308051725.AA08350@orion.sybgate.sybase.com> > What are the Razormaid mixes? Were they put out on one compilation CD or > individually? Razormaid is a remix service for DJs. They remix tracks and release them on compilations, which are avilable on vinyl and on CD. (So the various New Order remixes are scattered over various records and CDs.) Occasionally their remixes are released commercially. > What is the general sound of them? I have never heard them, but > noticed them on the discog and also as some of them being included > on the proposed CD project. Here's a quick rundown of the Razormaid New Order mixes: Blue Monday: basicly a medley of Blue Monday and The Beach. Nothing terribly new, but the arrangement is kind of nice. 5-8-6: Not too different from the original, but it's nice and long. Touched by the Hand of God: A longer mix with more thump thump and fewer ambient parts than the original. Bizarre Love Triangle: their remix isn't drastically different from the original, but the eq of the percussion and bass and the overall mix have amuch fuller sound than the original remixes. And they added a very effective break. 1st Subculture mix (1985): sort of similar to the Lowlife version, but with new synth breakdowns and soem interesting effects. Unfortunately this mix was only released on vinyl, and the vinyl was mastered with bass that's way too heavy, and it sounds utterly wretched. 2nd Subculture mix (1986): for this mix they brought in Debora Iyall of Romeo Void to do some additional vocals, which ended up being pretty interesting. (She changes "you realize you can't shaft without someone else" to "you realize you can't fuck without someone else") Unfortunately this mix was never released on CD either, but the vinyl version sounds fine. 3rd Subculture mix (1990): a completely new mix that sounds absolutely nothing like the Lowlife mix or the Substance mix. A sparse mix made up of a bass line, a synth line, minimal percussion, and Bernard's vocals. > How about the Hot Rod mixes? There's no such thing (even though people voted for it anyway). There is, however, a Hot Tracks mix. And I just learned that there is a Disco-Tech mix. (Hot Tracks and Disco-tech are two other DJ services, similar to Razormaid.) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Aug 93 19:54:48 CDT From: jacobson@merle.acns.nwu.edu To: ceremony@frontios.niagara.edu Subject: Ruined in A Day Single Message-Id: <9308060054.AA08781@merle.acns.nwu.edu> Hi, I bought the "Limited Edition made in England" Ruined in a Day CD single. Okay, it looks like a two cd box, it smells like a two cd box, so it should hold two cds, right? Wrongo. Obviously, unless I am the biggest fool for getting ripped off, NO is getting a little weird with the merchandising here. Inside, the Sly & Robbie Radio Edit, The 12 inch Bogle Mix, The Dance Hall Groove, and the Rhythm Twins Dub & The Live Mix. They all sound exactly alike. Not good. I paid a whopping $12.00 for reggae mixes of Ruined in A Day. And, in the space where the other cd should have been, there is a little cardboard cut out of a cd that says also available The Radio Edit, The Ambient Mix, Reunited in A Day Mix and Vicious Circle (Mike Haas Mix). Okay, those shound like they should be good, but I am very wary of buying anymore 2 cd cases to just get screwed over. Am I the only one out here? Should I complain? Oh, did anyone else who went to the Chicago show notice that Barney left out "How much is free for me and you, I'm on my knees I am a fool(k)" from Everyone Everywhere? I did. -Erica ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Aug 1993 01:00:19 -0400 (EDT) From: mike perkowitz To: ceremony mailing list Subject: new order + 808 state + sunscreem at great woods Message-Id: i got back from this concert not too long ago and it was pretty good. i'm not going to go into too many details, since it probably wasn't too different from other shows, but: sunscreem: i don't really know their stuff and wasn't really paying attention and we missed the beginning of their set. so 808 state: very good as usual. pacific was excellent. i thought it was their best song because it was fairly minimal -- the busier songs seemed muddy to me (as often seems to be the case at live performances). cubik was pretty good too.. their cover of the stones's "gimme shelter" was not too hot.. contrique was pretty good, and that joy division sample was appropriate for the night. :) plenty of people dancing too, particularly once they hit pacific and cubik. new order: you all know the setlist by now. ;) again, i thought the busier songs were sort of muddy, particularly the republic stuff. it sounded good enough, but once they played some of the older material, the republic songs just faded into the background. the perfect kiss was wonderful, the highlight of the set. the middle part, with just stephen and gillian's sounds was great -- hooky and barney just sort of standing around waiting for their parts to come back. :) fine time was excellent too. the electro stuff sounded great, nice and simple, after all those guitar-heavy tracks. ;) :P blue monday was pretty good too, but i would have liked to hear more than half a verse or so.. barney sang about six lines, some of them over and over. ;) speaking of barney's singing, he also made one flub in true faith, and got majorly lost in BLT. you would think that after doing the SAME SET for each show he would have it down. ;) oh, and he did say the "they all take drugs with me" line or whatever it was. ;) the light show was good. whoever asked what the projectors were for: at this show they showed various computer-generated rotating objects during round and round, some fractally-cloudy things during world (price of love) and lots of images during BLT in the style of the video.. mike ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Aug 1993 9:50:46 -0400 (EDT) From: Michael Aloysius Atienza To: ceremony@frontios.niagara.edu Subject: NY SHOW (actually Meadowlands in Jersey) Message-Id: <930806095046.2040126b@hartwick.edu> Well, I finally saw NO and they were pretty excellent. The lightshow was great, and the projection screen was amazing. Yep, Gillian played the guitar on two songs, and Peter looked very cool in all black outfit and a shaved face(!)(did he really shaved his facial hair?). Bernard screwed up a little on True Faith when he forgot some of the words. Then after Blue Monday everyone left on their own except Peter who banged away on the synthesizer with drumsticks which he later threw to the crowd after he was done. Overall, it was an excellent show I just wished they played longer........ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Aug 93 12:00:49 EDT From: jtam@ejv.com (Joe) To: ceremony@frontios.niagara.edu Subject: NJ show Message-Id: <9308061600.AA25696@ejvdev4> I just saw the NJ show on August 4, and I have to say, the show was only okay. Sunscreem was the first act. They sounded very good. Only played for half an hour though. Next was 808 state. I am not very familiar with them, but I have heard a few of their songs on WDRE here in Jersey. They sounded very good too, but the most annoying thing was the constant whistling into the mike. Every minute he would whistle loudly into the mike. And since the show is indoors, the echo effect it created was deafening. They too only played about 35 minutes. New Order finally came on 30 minutes after 808 state. The set was not extravagant at all, actually it was quite plain. But it was the perfect setting for the light show. During "Round and round", there was something projected over the band that resembles a chess piece. It was real cool. And the laser show was alright too. The strobe light was murder! It kept flashing and flashing and flashing. The show maybe lasted for an hour and 20 minutes. Barney was not in the mood at all. He looked as though he was doing us a favorite throughout the entire show. His voice was low and at times coarse. They played, if memory serves, maybe 10 songs. But if this show was to be compared with the show Morrissey put out a year back at Madison Square Garden in NYC, it would blow it away. Morrissey sucked live! -joe ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Aug 1993 13:04:40 -0400 (EDT) From: Joseph R Rizzo To: ceremony@frontios.niagara.edu Cc: Subject: LWTUA -> U2 Message-Id: The U2 discography mentions the band hiding some "Love Will Tear Us Apart" within the song "With or Without You." I bought this used 3 years ago. It's an Interview CD for Neworder. It has a picture of Barney wearing an Adidas (sp) t-shirt on the cover. The label says the CD was limited to 1500 copies. There are 2 interviews. One with Hook and god knows who else and then a second with Morris and Gillian. The first interview is annoying and almost impossible for this 'yanks' ears to make sense of and the second is...boring. I think I would die of boredom if I had to talk to Morris and Gillian. They certainly don't come off as very bright. Anyway, the interviews were done at the time of Low-life's release. They played True Faith (live for the first time says Barney, it was a good effort) and the lyrics in the verses were almost unrecognizable a couple of times. It was before the single came out so perhaps they hadn't "finalised" the lyrics as yet but I had the impression that he'd just forgotten them ;) As for the "Achoo!" bit: yeah he does this on the CD too. Although I get the fleeting impression when I hear it that he's actually saying "f*** you f*** you!". Strange... A funny bit towards the end is after Perfect Kiss when Barney says "That was just to warm you up for the looong cold night ahead of you!" and some yob in the crowd calls out "Fook off!". What a laugh! I'm unsure as to how widespread this release is. I've only ever seen it in two record stores (it cost Aust$50 at first) and have never heard any discussion about it in the digest or alt.music.alternative. Does anyone else have the CD and are there other interesting observations?
