It was the Hardfloor Mix. Hardfloor were the outfit that recently remixed Mory Kante's Yeke Yeke, and if anyone's heard that 12", they'll get the idea of what this mix is like. It's pretty trancey, but the full vocal has been kept, although it's been filtered heavily to make it sound like Bernard's on a telephone! I also heard a Tall Paul mix of True Faith - it's on the Cream Live album on DeConstruction in the Pete Tong set. That didn't have the vocal, but the chords sequences were the same and the guitar had been retained in places. I don't know if there is a vocal mix of that one. It would be pretty good if it exists. So, the big influence could have started with said period (after 81), but it is no surprise that even as early as '79 bands were being influenced. In '80, Mark Burgess saw Joy Division live and later formed the Chameleons (IMHO, one of the few bands to convey the same synergy, along with And Also The Trees). The Sex Pistols were more of an attitude influence than musical (as they have influenced even JD). I think early PiL was more influential than the sex pistols, with respect to music (with second edition or metal box, being *the* album: check the first album from Section 25). In as far as punk music, it seems clearer now that Wire and the Stranglers were more influential in this respect. You are NEVER EVER EVER going to "move beyond" the "element of entertainment" because you're not supposed to. Do you think that Joy Division's goal wasn't (in part) to make music that would be entertaining or enjoyable, if only to them, maybe, but enjoyable nonetheless. Maybe they didn't follow normal pop standards for making that kind of music, but things can still be entertaining if they're not pop. But, I think that Joy Division were very good at making very pop songs. Many songs have fantastically dancey beats and easily recognizable, hook-y (not Hook-y) bass lines. Look at Transmission or LWTUA. There's a reason Tony Wilson blathers on about "bigger than U2" in New Order story". Pop music isn't a bad form of music, there's nothing inherently wrong with it. Nothing about it negates any possible meaning in the song. Yes, it's entertaining, but then that's one of the functions of art, and it can never be "moved beyond" without taking away from one's appreciation of art. When you sit there and watch Hamlet or see a Van Gogh, you're SUPPOSED to enjoy the thing. You're not supposed to sit there in a fit, regarding these works. mab "I like Dostoevsky. I do enjoy the recording... however, during the Perfect Kiss, when everything is going at once, at the end, basically the bass drowns out the keyboard... This happened to my Band as well when we performed TPK... I dont understand why that happens, the bass part must take over or something... That was the first time I heard Touched By the Hand of God Live.. its interesting they should open with that song... Barney also messes up some of the words on the songs... Guess he wanted to redo em. I believe the version on the Substance video was performed live for the video -- at the time they were stickler about being anti-lip-synching so so made a nice, live video -- the fact that it's not the studio version is actually quite audible. Message-Id: <9504262350.AA16301@dsfmail.ghc.org> content-length: 2785 even in the early days of techno, NO still *sounded* different, because they were experimenting with equipment that most bands werent using (all the ARP things during Movement and Oberheim and EMU stuff circa PCL), but by the time of LowLife, they had switched to mostly Yamaha and Roland equipment, which everyone had begun to use at the time... co-incidentally, this was the same equipment that bands like DM and others began using, as it emerged as kind of a standard... as a result, the SOUND that had been so unique and so defining for so long, became a bit more commonplace... listeners who pay attention to the meaning behind the music would reject almost all of contemporary music (as they would have in the JD days), because most of it still retains an element of entertainment which hopefully people would have moved beyond... although DM shouldnt be singled out (I mean, someone posted the band Live in their top 5... LIVE???), they are, of course, completely inconsequential when looking at the big picture and are not even worthy of extensive criticism... I dont mean to get off on a rant here, but can you imagine this inability to distinguish substance going on in other areas of the arts? I can imagine it now... two curators are talking about Anselm Keifer's Metamorphosis paintings and in the next breath they are talking about Fabien Baron's packaging for Miyake products... *** I must say, one of the more intelligent things I've seen posted. The top 5 lists were actually quite revealling! Personally, I attributed the marked difference in choices between many on this list an myself (as well as other old-time JD / NO fans) to an age difference. I couldn't care less about bands like Live (and I HAVE heard them) and as I mentioned before, NO's contemporary "work" can't touch what they were doing in the 80s (esp. early 80s). While I agree that NO's attitude towards the music has retained a sense of integrity lacking in most pop bands, I think that their switch to traditional "easy" instruments (Roland et al), as mentioned, coincides with a less fresh approach to the music... basically, they have become more easy-making (formulaic) and easy-listening (accessible). Off the subject, but since you mentioned Anselm Keifer -- Are there many others who share my intense passion for his (and/or mentor Joseph Beuys') work? IMO, his aethetic is viscerally very parallel to the feelings generated by JD's music and NO's early stuff. Keifer is not quite pop enough to have is own list(!)... but I am curious to connect with any others interested in him. (The only other mention of him and Beuys was in the David Sylvian list) + --- Thom S.
