Any preferences between the Z505s and the F series? openbsd has worked well on the f420 and z505je that i've installed it on. choosing between the two is up to you, since they vary greatly in terms of size, weight, etc. the only drawback to the z505 series would have to be the usb floppy. it makes things kind of difficult. installation isn't hampered by it, though, since installation only requires one floppy. i've tried to get the usb floppy working under openbsd through the scsi emulation, but every time i try to access the disk, the light comes on and nothing productive happens. i have some non-useful information at http://rt.fm/~jcs/vaio/ about them. There is only one BIOS setting (plug and play OS), and I tried both options without effect. The 2.7 CD still boots fine, so I guess it's not a hardware or configuration issue. It may take a couple tries. I'm booting off the CD-ROM when the message appears. You mean I should boot from floppy? This particular CD-ROM drive gets its power from the pcmcia port, there's no external power or switch I could use to turn it on after the computer is on. Unless you mean I should connect the pcmcia card at that point, while the laptop is already running. I hear how the CD-ROM starts spinning after the wdc2 message appears, several times (and the LED goes on), but then it just continues to spin and nothing more happens. If all else fails, I'll boot from floppy and do an ftp install, I was just wondering whether there is something I could do to get the CD-ROM working, since it works with 2.7. Thank you for your answer. Unfortunately, there's still information that's missing like the code that's needed to prep the DSP engine to decode audio signals. I think that's something Yamaha is holding close to their chest. We looked at writing an open source driver for Linux for this sound chip, but never did because a) Yamaha wouldn't give us the stuff above, and b) we decided not to sell that laptop. I have gotten X to run on this on OpenBSD before, but with 2.8, for some reason, having an aperature driver enabled isn't sufficient. I get blank screens, and (in certain circumstances) freezes. No crash, just a freeze from which I cannot get a dump. The workaround was to compile INSECURE, and keep from going to secureleve= l=3D1, but that seems really crappy, especially since the aperature driver was designed to avoid this requirement. I failed completely to use the in-tree X11, which gave me seeming success according to the X output, but blank screen on tty4. XFree86 4.0.2 from CVS seemed to get far enough to tell me that the system needed a lower securelevel, even though it seemed to tell me that it had used the aperature driver. Has anyone else noticed X wierdness in 2.8? Yes I checked the archives. ;) Last OBSD I tried on this laptop was 2.6, and I had to use XFree86 4.0 to make it work. 4.01 died miserably with machine freezes. :( Thanks. regards, Christian. The Xircom card is the REM56G-100, a 16 bit card that according to my research is supported. When I install OpenBSD 2.8 using floppyC28.fs, the Xircom card is recognized as xe0 and pccom3. There are a few xe0 timeouts duirng the network configuration, but the card works fine. After I complete installation and reboot with the stock 2.8 kernel, the kernel will hang after I mount it mounts the filesystems on the "setting ttys" flag. If the PCMCIA card is not in the NEC Versa SX the laptop hangs while booting. That problem is solved by disabling pcibios in a custom kernel. Unfortunately, while my custom kernel boots and runs fine w/o the Xircom card in, when I inert the Xircom card...kernel panic and crash. Arrgh My question: can anyone supply me with the kernel config files used to build the floppyC28 kernel? My plan is to boot with floppyC28l, mount my /usr directory by hand, download srcsys.tar.gz, recompile my kernel and install it. Any help/advice/pointers would be graeatly appreciated! Look at /usr/src/sys/arch/i386/conf/RAMDISKC for the config of that kernel. If you're curious about how the floppy is put together, take a look at /usr/src/distrib/i386/floppies. Beware - it's a maze of Makefiles including each other, so you have to hunt around to figure out what's going on. I left .au to come home to the US for the holidays and forgot to grab my card 56k modem. So I'm stuck using win2k to dial up with (and watching everyone in the world sweep the dialups at my parents ISP). I loaded rh 7 on another partition because I wanted to take a stab at porting the work at http://www.linmodems.org and http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html to open somehow. keep me posted on any progress you make and i'll share mine. I'm iced in (yay arkansas) so I'm balancing playing freeciv and twiddling with the modem. regards, neal ___________ d neal wise - nwise@spy.net SPY internetworking - will network for food http://www.spy.net From owner-openbsd-mobile-outgoing@naughty.monkey.org Fri Dec 29 20:55:29 2000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: openbsd-mobile-outgoing@naughty.monkey.org Received: by naughty.monkey.org (Postfix, from userid 502) id 1E29A10860D; Fri, 29 Dec 2000 20:55:28 -0500 (EST) Delivered-To: openbsd-mobile@monkey.org Received: by naughty.monkey.org (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 2D27E108609; Fri, 29 Dec 2000 20:55:27 -0500 (EST) Received: from rogue.river.com (rogue.river.com [206.168.172.14]) by naughty.monkey.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8E672108604 for ; Fri, 29 Dec 2000 19:51:11 -0500 (EST) Received: from rogue.river.com (rogue.river.com [206.168.172.14]) by rogue.river.com (8.10.1/8.9.2) with ESMTP id eBU0ovi09048; Fri, 29 Dec 2000 17:50:58 -0700 (MST) Message-Id: In-Reply-To: <010c01c06b74$d0bfc120$1a090a0a@cnet.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 13:41:28 -0700 To: "dmuz" , "openbsd-mobile" From: "Richard Johnson" Subject: Re: OpenBSD-mobile: recomendations for pcmcia modem Sender: openbsd-mobile-owner@monkey.org Precedence: bulk At 10:38 -0700 on 12/21/00, dmuz wrote: > the subject says it all.. what pcmcia modems have people had good > experiences with? The "56Kbps(Cirrus) Fax Modem PC Card V.90 and V.34" marketed as "SmartLink 56Kbps PCMCIA Modem Card" for $50 and the "56Kbps(Conexant) Fax Modem PC Card V.90 & K56flex, V.34" marketed as "Best Data 56K PC Card" for $70 share FCC ID: 5HRTAI-31904-M5-E, and share the same flat modular phone adapter cord. Yes, that's why I have two. :-) Evidently, these two and a whole bunch of similar units are assembled by one Taiwanese company. We use and sell the Ambicom PCMCIA 56K modem. It's cheap, fast, and good. It works very well under Linux and *BSD. As for combo cards, we use and sell the RealPort 10/100 + 56K modem combo cards (16 bit only) which rock.
