This is my first attempt at using OpenBSD, so I apologize for any obvious, gross ignorance on my part. I tried to get it working on my own, and ended up using xf86cfg -textmode to generate the config file included below named XF86Config-homemade, which generates the errors contained in the log, XFree86.0.log-homemade. After that failed, I looked for more information and found some. On http://www.openbsd.org/i386-laptop.html, I see that as of 2.9: All features including hibernation and APM work. I also saw Jim Rees' 2.9 success story at http://www.citi.umich.edu/u/rees/openbsd/tp701c.html. Even knowing that 2.9 used an earlier version of XFree86, 4.0.3 I think, I tried his config file XF86Config-701c, which for me generated the log XFree86.0.log-701c. I have also looked at some of the archives for this mailing list, 0107 through 0112, but I did not see anything that I could relate to my experience. Do any of the subscribers to this list have any ideas or advice to offer on my current situation? Thank you in advance, Eric Miller eric.miller@epsiia.com XF86Config-homemade: Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Layout0" Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0 InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard" InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer" EndSection Section "Files" EndSection Section "Module" Load "xie" Load "pex5" Load "glx" Load "dri" Load "dbe" Load "record" Load "extmod" Load "type1" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse0" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "wsmouse" Option "Emulate3Buttons" Option "Device" "/dev/wsmouse0" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard0" Driver "keyboard" Option "XkbModel" "pc101" Option "XkbLayout" "us" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor0" HorizSync 31.5 - 31.5 VertRefresh 50.0 - 70.0 EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Card0" Driver "chips" ChipSet "ct65545" Card "Chips & Technologies CT65545" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Card0" Monitor "Monitor0" DefaultDepth 8 SubSection "Display" Depth 8 Modes "640x480" EndSubSection EndSection XFree86.0.log-homemade: XFree86 Version 4.1.0 (for OpenBSD) / X Window System (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6510) Release Date: 2 June 2001 If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is newer than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting problems. The boot message tells me: dc0: MII without any PHY! I've tried in a lot of different ways but with no results. Can you tell me: - The card is fully/partially/not supported ? - Which driver/PHY combination I have to use ? - Any kernel configuration file for example ? - Any suggestion? Sometimes you have to go all the way back to 3.3.6, but I think the Thinkpad 701c will work with 4.0.3, which you can get from the OpenBSD 2.9 cd (you might need some shared libs from /usr/lib too). I will put a note on my 701c web page about this. By the way, be sure to specify 16bpp. For some reason you get 8bpp by default when you use xf86cfg on this machine. Eh, you've got an 'interesting' problem, so you're not being ignorant. :) >From the log files, it appears that the X server is segfaulting. It's nontrivial to debug this problem; the standard XFree86 distribution uses the homegrown XFree86 module loader, which confuses gdb to no end. Can you log in to the laptop via network or serial terminal? That's a big help if you want to try to debug this. Can you build XFree86 from source? If so, drop #define DoLoadableServer NO #define XF86CardDrivers chips into config/cf/host.def, and do a "make World", then put the resulting programs/Xserver/XFree86 in /usr/X11R6/bin. Run it under gdb, and see where the backtrace leads. > XF86Config-homemade: [snip] > Section "Module" > Load "xie" > Load "pex5" > Load "glx" > Load "dri" > Load "dbe" > Load "record" > Load "extmod" > Load "type1" > EndSection It wouldn't hurt to comment out some or all of these, to eliminate them as possible sources of difficulty. Looks like Jim's page mentions a bug in the 4.1.0 chips driver... have you tried 4.0.3? There have been significant changes in the chips driver since 4.1.0; 4.2.0 should be out "RSN" (this month) and might prove helpful. I can provide "4.1.99.5" binaries for 2.9 or 3.0-current if some C&T user would like to test them before 4.2.0 becomes available. Unfortunately it looks like the driver interface has changed enough that the 4.2.0 chips.o won't work with a 4.1.0 server. Since you have to get out your 2.9 cd anyway, it's better to get the proper libc too. Also, you need to preserve permissions. The problem is, that the card doesn't seem to be recognized... I'm totally new to PCMCIA in OpenBSD, so I don't know how it's supposed to look in the dmesg when a card is detected allright. I tried all 3 boot floppies, and I tried booting with the card already inserted, and without it being inserted (and then I hotplugged it afterwards). But I don't think OpenBSD notices the card at all because there's nothing about it in the dmesg (not even an error!) and the lights on the card don't go on or anything. The PCMCIA Ethernet card I'm trying to use is a Longshine LCS-8538TX It's a PCMCIA Type II card, that does 10/100Mbps etc. (see http://www.longshine.de/produkt/fast/8538tx.htm for more technical details about the card. It may be a bit confusing because the same card also exists in a PCCARD and USB version, but I have the PCMCIA version) It should work under Linux without any trouble, according to Longshine. I haven't tested that myself yet though. I also found this on a Linux hardware site: "Description: This 10/100 mbit/s PCMCIA-Adapter works without any problems whatsoever. The PCMCIA-Driver recognizes the LCS-8385TX as being NE2000-compatible and that works... :-) " (http://www.linux.com/enhance/hardware/hdb.phtml?id=183) So if it's NE2000-compatible, it should work, since PCMCIA based NE2000 cards are supported by the boot floppy. So probably (hopefully?) OpenBSD just doesn't recognize the card as being NE2000 compatible. Is there anything I can do to force OpenBSD into treating the card as an NE2000 compatible? I'm attempting to install 3.0 on my shiny new laptop, in a dual-boot configuration with win2k. It boots off of the cd very happily (either the pcmcia, or the docking station), and I'm able to partition the disk with no hassles. It doesn't see the cdrom(s) when it comes to installation, however. I've worked around that by copying the relevant files to the DOS partition, and installing from there. The problem that I'm currently having is that it doesn't boot. A check at the boot prompt shows that it's not seeing the drive that openbsd is installed on. I'm guessing that the install kernel uses bios-based settings to talk to the hard drive, and the installed kernel is using some other mechanism. I can't compile a more up to date loader, because this (disfunctional) machine is the only openbsd box that I've got. Hints, thoughts, and directions appreciated - dmesg below. cheers! ========================================================================== "A cat spends her life conflicted between a deep, passionate and profound desire for fish and an equally deep, passionate and profound desire to avoid getting wet. It looks like the secondary boot loader isn't functioning correctly, or able to find the drive. > Try this: Boot from CD, then at the boot> prompt type "boot wd0a:/bsd -a", > then at the "root device" prompt type "wd0". Well - I've tried that, but it hasn't worked. According to the 'boot>' prompt, wd0 doesn't exist. If I recall correctly, it sees fd0, fd1, hd0, and won't accept a "boot a:/bsd ...and having gone and checked, what I get is (typos are mine): boot> boot wd0a:/bsd -a booting wd0a:/bsd failed(22) boot> (a bunch of retry attempts with obsd, and bsd.old which fail (2)) It then segues into the boot process, and eventually prompts: root device? At this point, the box locks up, and I have to pull the battery and external power to get it to talk again. I've also tried using floppyC, with the same results. > Pretty cool that the memory stick works. However, one small issue haunts my enjoyment of this laptop: it doesn't respond well to openbsd install attempts. Part of the problem seems to be that the cdrom drive is a (proprietary?) PCMCIA device. I have also attempted to install from floppy with similar results. Has anyone gotten the sr33k to take OpenBSD (3.0)? I've been using 'floppyC' for these attempts. -Dr. Kle Dr. Flo R. I'm using a 3c589 on a thinkpad 380ed running release 3.0. The only weirdness I have is if I boot it with a lucent silver card and the 589 inserted (I get fatal-like weird timeouts accessing wd0 while booting). But if I boot with only the wireless card in it and add the 589 after it's up it works fine. I just checked and there weren't any errors on the ep0 interface in netstat with a reasonable amount of traffic through it. ep1 at pcmcia1 function 0 "3Com Corporation, 3C589, TP/BNC LAN Card Ver. 2a" port 0x4e0/16: irq 9: address 00:a0:24:a5:27:7a, utp/aui/bnc (default utp $ netstat -ni -I ep1 Name Mtu Network Address Ipkts Ierrs Opkts Oerrs Colls ep1 1500 00:a0:24:a5:27:7a 52312 0 48085 0 0 ep1 1500 192.168.35/ 192.168.35.42 52312 0 48085 0 0 ep1 1500 fe80::/64 fe80::2a0:24ff:fe 52312 0 48085 0 0 $ uptime 4:35PM up 2 days, 23:36, 2 users, load averages: 0.18, 0.12, 0.09 $ That's a weekends browsing from the armchair using the stinkpad as a wifi gateway. I think my problem is just that window of memory some thinkpads like to have for themselves (other onboard devices/the pcmcia controller? perhaps) and not what you're experiencing. The last displayed line is: cbb0 at pci0 dev 12 function 0 "Ricoh 5C475 PCI-Cardbus" rev 0x80 disabling the cbb device, the floppy USB boot w/out cdrom drive attached (no pcmcia device attached) it hangs at: pcmcia0 at pcic0 controller 0 socket 0 but it seems to me that the Cardbus device is important, no? I can disable the pcmcia driver/device, but then how do I install from pcmcia/ethernet or pcmcia/cdrom drive? So disabling cbb and pcmcia here is what I get(booting from USB floppy/no pcmcia devices attached), it hangs at: pcmcia at pcic0 controller 0 socket 0 not configured (all listed outputs in this email are with UKC set to verbose). Booting from pcmcia/cdrom device, disabling the wdc device I get the (I)nstall (U)pgrade or (S)hell prompt, but that tries to installed to sd0, then gives me sd0 input/output errors (and the verbose dmesg displays them as well). I don't claim to be any sort of harware guru but doesn't the cardbus control the pcmcia devices, or have I got that mistaken? One friend suggested getting a laptop hard drive to desktop controller adaptor, installing there and swapping it back in. I would like to post my dmesg, perhaps I should take a snapshot and post the image? =| I search the misc archives for ninjaATA and it came up a few times in peoples posted dmesgs for working machines, so I figured it was supported. I couldn't find any mentions of this particular model of Sony which has no built in floppy or cdrom, and since my problems seemed to arise from the booting process/hardware itself. I have not yet downloaded all the openbsd-mobile archives to search them, but I assumed that they were indexed by google so were indirectly searched. These attempts are using OpenBSD 3.0. -Dr. Kle --- "Federico G. A friend of mine running Open 3.0 on a vaio with a memory stick showed me that it's recognized as a SCSI device and called sd0. Which is pretty funky. So he keeps key stuff on it which is a great idea. > I don't claim to be any sort of harware guru but > doesn't the cardbus control the pcmcia devices, or > have I got that mistaken? cardbus = 32 bit PCI-based - dimpled cards on the connector pcmcia = 16 bit ISA-based (i think that's right) > One friend suggested getting a laptop hard drive to > desktop controller adaptor, installing there and > swapping it back in. yeah those cables (3.5 IDE -> 2.5 IDE/power) are handy. however that's a bit severe though and likely violates any warranty you have. I had a compaq aero with one type-1 pcmcia slot a few years ago that had a pcmcia floppy. I could boot -c (config boot) off the floppy and at the > prompt for config'ing I could pull the floppy device out and put in a known supported network card. quit the config menu and watch to see if the card is recognized during boot. Then network install. Before doing this I installed it using PLIP (on FreeBSD). Very slow and ugly. > I would like to post my dmesg, perhaps I should take a > snapshot and post the image? =| either that or get a serial console on it somehow to capture it. If it's like my friends vaio you probably have no legacy serial and you have to use a USB<->serial adapter. Which gets into another supported device area :) If you can get it to the point where you can install/upgrade/shell you can put another floppy in, mount it and write the dmesg output to it. > I have not yet downloaded all the openbsd-mobile > archives to search them, but I assumed that they were > indexed by google so were indirectly searched. yeah that should be the case. The reboot hung with the USB flooppy attached, but the archives mentioned problems with that, so once removed, it booted fine. My 3com card, for which I don't have the dongle at the moment, should work and allow me to post my dmesg. Thanks to all who provided suggestions, as they forced me to look more closely at what was going on. I will post my dmesg once I get the machine networked, and seek to get the USB floppy and pcmcia cdrom drive to work. Even if they don't I'd much rather have an OpenBSD laptop with a working network card than a win2k laptop with floppy/cdrom. A funny note about the install, when I used dhcp to grab my address, and it installed, I rebooted and it didn't configure the /etc/hostname.if as dhcp, it had the inet ip mask arg's line, but rather as static with the 192.168 address. Maybe this is a feature and not a bug? -Dr. Flo R. Kle --- d neal wise wrote: > On Wed, 30 Jan 2002, Dr. Flo R. Running 3.0. When I suspend my Thinkpad 240, the 3c575 (10/100 cardbus ethernet) stays powered up. I am then unable to unsuspend. The "resuming" light starts blinking but the screen never lights up, and I have to power cycle. I have tried apm0 flags 0x10000 with no difference.
