3Com xl driver alpha watchdog timeout

3c905b driver does not work on Alpha.
Error message: xl0 watchdog timeout
arp -a hangs
ifconfig alias hangs on xl0 interface, ...
switch/hub shows connection
tried two different cards, thus no hw error
moving card to different slot did not help.
In primary slot SRM says unknown PCI device
and halts (newest firmware available installed).
In secondary slot card is not recognized by SRM
but OpenBSD detects it.
