This is a well-known problem. The update to texinfo 3.12 was made to avoid that problem. Now that 2.6 is out, and that we agreed the ports tree stays in synch with the release, all of this cruft can be removed.

I'm waiting for Chris' approval before I kill *all* of this cruft from the ports tree in one sweeping commit.
