Re: Bad news about OpenBSD mirror...
Wheeww..what a day.
After some heated discussions I was able to halt the execution of
mirror.arc.nasa.gov. Several of you sent email to me about your use of the
service and how it helps you do your work and the like. They were very
helpful in pointing out to management that "pulling the plug" was probably
not a good idea even if "it is out of the scope of our charter". Part of
the concessions I made, to allow the machine to be left operational, was
for it to be moved to an official "public services" network in the future.
This is actually a good thing for the OpenBSD community as the "public
services" network is closer to MAE/FIX-WEST than the current location ;).
So I guess this fiasco wasnt all painful.
Sorry for ruffling the feathers but I felt it was better to give those of
you who use mirror.arc.nasa.gov on a regular basis enough of a heads up
that it would not impact your day to day work.
Now you can all go delete the "NASA Sucks" emails you were going to send. ;)
ps: Thank you to Andre for offering to send a polite letter to my
management explaining the benefits of helping the OpenBSD project.
