I can confirm that setting BIOS to 1024c,16h,63s and running installboot
works. I have a pair of 40.9GB Maxtor disks.

bios = cyl: 1024, hd: 16, sec: 63, precomp: 65535, landzone: 19616
commandline = 'installboot -v -s 63 -h 16 /boot /usr/mdec/biosboot wd0'

The kernel sees the whole disk properly.
