How can i get my accents :(

I know this is a very lame question, but i have some very annoying
problems with my terminal : it shos french characters properly, i have
set my keyboard map to f8 (french), but i cannot type those french
caracters (i'm using bash with the same config than with my linux boxes,
where everything works). Neither do i know how i can map the Altgr keuy
properly, in order for example to have the at properly, etc... I looked
for docs on the web, but couldn't find any. If i manage this i'll write
some kind of FAQ, but if someone could please help me (that is just show
where is hould look for doc and what kind of doc) i'd be very thankful.
