I tried increasing the mtu/mru. I'm not NATting. The fragmentation
idea sounds interesting. I have included the output of a ping.
Initially, I have almost no traffic. Then, I start an FTP to fetch
base26.tar.gz. That occurs around icmp_seq=60. You'll notice that the
time increases dramatically. Note at the end of the output, too, as it
shows a packet with a much higher icmp_seq. It seems that I was wrong
before when I said that it hangs indefinitely. In fact, there is quite
a bit of delay in a ping, but it does not delay indefinitely.
Also, about 20 physical seconds after the delays began in the ping, I
tapped Control-C on the FTP, which would abort the high rate of
transfer. I noticed the abort show up (i.e. the Control-C got through)
approximately 25 seconds after I pressed it. Keep this in mind if you
decide to take a look at the ping output.
I am strongly considering alternatives at this point, as ssh/ppp seems
not to be working well.

Hmm. What is the advantage of using ppp? I do not know much about it.
I will have to take a look at this option.
