Kernel compile error

Thanks for the info - I installed the source off of my 2.6 CD, typed cvs
update -PAd in /usr/src, which then updated the entire tree. It compiled
fine until I got to the linking stage, and then gave me an error about
undefined symbols _wdc_ and such in an IO object file (i think it was
ioconfig.o or something like that...). I'd give the exact error message
except I can't from where I am right now.

I apologize for the lack of information. Is is a good idea to re-compile
the system libraries before doing a new kernel?

Any ideas?
Thanks for any help,
Luke
