PPP problem

I'm a new user to OpenBSD, and I'm having a small problem with PPP. 
I've configured /etc/ppp/ppp.conf as outlined in the FAQ.  The first
dialup (via 'ppp -auto <ispname>') goes smoothly, but subsequent dialups
fills the logs with:
	
	Error:  chat_Write: Input/output error

The problem is replicated using ppp interactively.  In that case,
however, I'm able to use some combination of 'close', 'down' and just
waiting a bit to get it to make a successful second connection.  I
haven't worked out which of these are actually allowing me to make the
second connection.

I did a Google search for the string but came up empty.  I didn't see
anything relevant in the FAQ.  I'm posting here hoping that someone has
already battled this problem and could point me in the right direction.
