problem with SMC network card

I'm getting the following error on boot when networking is started:
ifconfig: SIOCAIFADDR: File exists

and it doesn't configure the card (obviously)

dmesg output:
we2 at isapnp0 "SMC EtherEZ (8416), SMC8416, , " port 0x240/32 irq
3: SMC8416C/SMC8416BT (16-bit)
we2: address 00:00:c0:f3:a4:d2

/etc/hostname.we2:
inet 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0 NONE

There are no resource conflicts that I can see.  Anyone have any ideas?
