Itanium is very different than x86 stuff. It requires a lot more from the
compilers and will require a total port of any OS that is to run on it. The
good news is that a lot of the ugly things required for the x86 chips will
go away. This chip was designed to support high end needs and is not just
the latest upgrade of the 8008.
