Re: Console Locking Up
It is (probably) the keyboard/mouse/video switch.
More accurately, it is the MOUSE portion of the switch. If you aren't
useing the mouse on the OpenBSD system, unplug its cable from the
OpenBSD system. If you are using the mouse on the OpenBSD system,
invest in a mouse for JUST the OpenBSD system (i.e., don't switch the
mouse).
Your results on different boxes on different OSs in no way vindicates
the KVM switch.
Switching PS/2 mice has historically been an "issue" (obviously much
better now than it once was) -- although I have been told by someone
who took credit (as I recall) for the OpenBSD keyboard software that
OpenBSD has a special problem with it. Not switching the mouse has
done wonderous things for other people.
And yes, PS/2 mice and the keyboard are very closely linked.
Nick.

If I a) login via console and don't interact with the system through the console, I find it locks up, or if I don't login for a long time, the console stops responding. The system still works (ie ssh, ftp, dns -- its my router/firewall system), it's just the console locking I have a problem with. The machine itself is a Dell OptiPlex GXi (Pentium 166 with 64 megs of ram), and it is on a KVM switch. I seriously doubt it's the kvm switch thats the problem, because I also have a linux and FreeBSD box connected to it, and no problems there. If anyone has a solution or maybe an idea, please email me back.
