Release 2.8 will ship with a GENERIC kernel that includes USB support,
except that the controllers ("uhci" and "ohci") will be disabled. This way
you don't have to recompile to get USB -- you just have to use config -e
to rewrite a new kernel with USB turned on.

Hopefully USB keyboards will be supported on the i386 by 2.9.
