I had that happen when I tried to go from 2.7 to 2.8 via cvs update.
The new "ld" I compiled would generate a core-dump which filled my 2G
partition.
To solve it, I did what I should have (according to the FAQ) done the
first time---installed the latest snapshot and upgraded from there.
On my (i386) system, the whole OS, sources and object files comes in
under one gigabyte. (I don't have more than about 20MB worth of
ports and local additions).
