Compile dies with /: write failed file system full

I used Anoncvs to update my src to current, I build a new kernel(2.8) but 
when I try to do "make build" it ends up saying

/: write failed file system full

the 2.7 tree with patches built fine.  I have a 10gig hard drive and I just 
put everything into one / partition since it is a home system.
