Re: Road Runner and IP Masquerading

The MediaOne RoadRunner systems I have seen are keyed to the MAC
address, but a simple phone call to them will get the new MAC added to
this list. They are pretty responsive, there are a fair number of
people who use it for both their home machines and their laptops, one
at a time (according to the rules, of course ;). A client of mine who
had to call them said the tech support person said they like to limit
the users to two MACs, but relatively little gentle persuasion got
them to increase it to three, after that, they like to delete old MACs
that they accepted.

@Home systems that I have seen, all you need to do is powercycle the
"modem".

Key phrase in both cases is "that I have seen". I've heard stories of
all kinds of other operational issues. Keep in mind, with cable ISP
companies being bought and sold, and the technology changes that have
taken place since the first cable ISPs started offering internet
services, there are NO univeral rules. It rather sounds like even the
service agreements vary from local to local within the same company.
About the only generality is that you and your next door neighbor
probably have the same operational details.

This entire discussion, however, is Off Topic (like I should talk
8-). Tim Martin indicated that his OpenBSD box can see the outside
world, so we know he got his OpenBSD box and the cable modem working
together. My bet is the IPF rules pointed out by Reinhard J. Sammer,
and I'm embarassed I didn't notice that myself (I got stuck on
net.inet.ip.forwarding=1). TIM! Don't hold us in suspense! 8-)

Nick.
