snort is what you are really looking for. It is a lightweight IDS & it 
is truly excellent (Stephen Nortcutt, Lead of Global Incident Analysis 
Center, considers it as the top-of-the-notch IDS of the year). On the 
homepage (www.snort.org) , you can generate filters & find signatures by 
the hundreds. Pretty well documented too.
