I sound like an idiot, please be gentle with clue stick.

I am trying to install 2.8 on an old pentium
system. I am connecting to houston.rr.com through a RealTek 8193 ethernet
card. I have had no problems (that I can tell) until I try to FTP the
tarballs. I either get a "cannot find route" or a "Operation timed out"
error. This happens when I connect the computer in question directly to
the cable modem, or when I try to connect via ICS through my win98 box. In
all of my various iterations, I cannot sucessfully ping anything outside my home
network. What am I doing wrong? Am I having problems because I have
only the losest of ideas about what I am doing? Or does road runner not
allow non MS operating systems (can they tell?)?
On a related note: Since I can communicate within
my LAN, is it possible to do an NFS install from the win98 box? i.e. does
fat32 count as a network file system?
Thanks
