we didnt want or need a functional database server, just the libraries
for php, we were expecting to have to pay for them, but no-one i'd spoke
to had heard of openbsd, so i couldnt find out if they had them for
sale.

i've since talked to someone at sybase who said they only support linux
atm with no plans for supporting other free os's (and the 12.5 beta was
released yesterday)

thanks for everyone's help though, if i get anything working, ill let
you know.

cheers
