bridging and wx* problem

does anyone know of a kernel option (besides the obvious: device wx*,
pseudo-device bridge 2, etc.) that would interfere with setting up a bridge
with intel gig nics (wx*) on 2.8-RELEASE? when i use GENERIC i have no
problems, but as soon as i compile a custom kernel whose configuration was
known good in 2.7-RELEASE brconfig starts bitching:

$ brconfig bridge0 add wx0
brconfig: bridge0: wx0: Invalid argument

i386, P3-700, adaptec 7896 U2 scsi controller.

i can send my kernel config if necessary
