I've an old Pentium/100 with a 3Com 3c509 in it as well (and,
coincidentally, I have a tulip-based card as well). I had some weird
errors until I downloaded a DOS-based config program from 3com.com. Grab
3c509x2.exe from their site, extract it (it's compressed with lha), copy
3c5x9cfg.exe to a DOS boot disk, and run it. I just told it to
autoconfigure the card for DOS and things worked fine after that.
