mpg123 "no supported rate found"

i went to geocrawler.com and google.com and searched the archives and
found the same question but no answers.  I have a sony pcg-c1xs picture
book. the sound card is ymf744.  I installled oss from opensound.com
version 394b-28 and i recompiled the kernel without sound support.  I know
the sound card works because i could use mpg123 to decode to a wave file
and use the play utility that comes with oss to play it.  The problem is
when i try mpg123 sadf.mp3 it give me no supported rate.  I tried mpg123
-m -r 8000 asdf.mp3, and nothing still same error.

So in conclusion, i have a sound card that can play wav files but mpg123
cant play mp3s, is there something im missing?
what is this no supported rate error. why is it so vague.
