I have successfully installed OpenBSD 2.7 under VMWare with network & 
all by compiling the kernel without the UVM option (if you do this, 
you'll need also to comment out an adaptec driver ... I can't recall 
which one). Well maybe you can try this on 2.8 and report back to the 
community (I used VMWare 2.0.2-build621 under Linux).
