newbie ports question

I have read through the ports section of the OpenBSD website, but I am
not exactly understanding what I need.  I am running a 2.7 system and
want to update the ports tree.  I have read that you should not update
the ports tree to the current once with a previous version since you
may be missing things what the builds need.  Could someone give me a
little push on what I am missing?
