More problems:

xf86cfg -textmode finally worked for me but starting XFree86 took the 
whole video output straight into nirvana and only by connecting from 
another box I could access the computer. So it seems that 4.03 is not 
for me yet but XF86Setup just won't generate a running XF86Config so 
that I can't use 3.3.6 either. The problem seems to be that the 
modelines are incorrect ("1024x0", "800x0", etc.)
