I asked the same question a couple months back. It seems to come down to this:

Some of the DEC Tulip clones (de driver) are good, some aren't, & 
most manufacturers change chipsets more often than..., well, much too 
often to count on getting what you think you're getting. These cards 
tend to be in the $10-50 range.

3Com 3C905 cards are around $100. Some people swear by them, others at them.

Just about everybody who had something to say about the i8255x (fxp) 
Intel cards loved them. Since they can be had for $44 from The Chip 
Merchant, I've gone with these for all the boxes I've built lately. 
I've also put OpenBSD on a couple of pre-built boxes that came with 
these built-in. No problems so far, so I recommend these.
