Modem Auto Answer

A question about modems - 

I have two internal modems that I've setup as COM1 & COM2 using jumpers.  On
boot the serial ports are detected, as shown in dmesg.  However, these
modems have no non-volatile memory to store settings.  How can I send the
command strings after boot to put them into auto answer mode?  Or should
getty be doing that based on the keyword 'dialup'?
