more news: if you can get a true GENERIC kernel to boot, you're OK. i
just used a 2.9-release floppy, and then did a network install from the
build box. the test machine now has a whopping 2.5 minutes of uptime, but
it looks good so far.
i'm thinking it might have something to do with the SMALL_KERNEL option
or the strip operation...
