USB Visor Edge problem

I am trying to get my Handspring Visor Edge to sync through USB using
pilot-link. I can't seem to get a connection.

I typed this command:

pilot-link -p /dev/utty0 -b .visor/backup/

Unless I press the HotSync button on the cradle before I execute this
command, I get the message that it cannot bind to the port. If I press
the button first and then execute the command, it says waiting for
connection and then just sits there. The Visor then errors out and says
it cannot establish a connection. Any ideas what could be going on?
