Sounds like ppp is hanging somewhere.  A typical cause might be that 
your host name doesn't resolve (what does ``ping $(hostname)'' say ?).

Also, ensure you've got no host names in your config -- unless 
they're resolvable *without* ppp being up.

Doing something like ``set log tun command phase lcp ipcp chat'' in 
your ppp.conf file may help too.
