The O'Reilly books is lots of theory and v little practical help. The second one has lots of practical help and a little theory.

If you have to get one, get the second book. Their jokes etc can be annoying, but you'll learn enough of the basics to get going.

If you are keen to know a lot about firewalls, get both, and start with the second one. Once you've built a firewall and understand the basics, the O'Reilly book starts to make more sense and becomes more useful.

OpenBSD, for example, is mentioned in the O'Reilly book, but no more. Half of the second book is about OpenBSD. Well, ipf. And apparently pf, the replacement for ipf, will use the same syntax. but i could be wrong.
