Minimal Kernel

Hi: is there a place where I can grab kernel examples? (other than
GENERIC) I need to setup a very limited ram box and would like to hack
and slack the GENERIC stuff ... 
Will have to Realtek 8139 nic.

I need this cuz I am not kernel expert and don't want to remove stuff
that may be needed. 

Any url/faq/doc will be appreciated.
