Not in my experience.  Yes, you can sometimes get a good deal (even rock
bottom);  but more commonly Sun machines get irrationally bid up to very
high prices.

My preferred strategy is to find large companies or univerities that are
getting rid of old equipment.  Especially within businesses, the people
disposing of the hardware don't know the value of it, and are grateful
just to have it off their hands.  This does sometimes mean buying in bulk,
or by the pallet, and commonly the machines will be several years behind
the curve.

Of course, that takes a lot more time/effort than simply searching on EBay..
