In case this could be of any help...
I experienced something similar a while ago on a 2.9 (+errata) machine.
About once a day it locked up just like you describe - still pingable
but not usable. No log messages. Only power cycle helped.
It happened with the GENERIC kernel as well as a minimized one with
all non-critical drivers disabled, often during heavy disk activity.
I was running 2.9 on machines with identical hardware without any
problems. Oh, identical except for the hard disks.
On wd0 I had an old Seagate. wd1 was an IBM disk with all my
OpenBSD partitions (lockups occurred both with wd0 mounted or unmounted,
and both with softupdates enabled or disabled).
Very well, the Seagate went out the window and so did the problem.
I have since then been running with many other disks as well without
any problem.
Since I assumed (and still assume(?)) it was a 100% hardware failure
problem in my case I don't have a dmesg from that time.
Current dmesg is below though. Same hardware as then except for the
hdd devices.
The machine had not been running anything else than OpenBSD 2.9 with that
particular hardware configuration so I can't tell if this was introduced
in 2.9 or even if it was OpenBSD-specific at all.
In other words, if it happens to you again it might be a good idea to
have a look at the hard disks...
