actually 2.8 does the same thing. the actual error message is:

xl0: command never completes

ifconfig xl0 says: no carrier

on my Linksys router the Link/Act light is blinking and Full/Col is off. 
these both should be on solid as well as the 100 light. this setup works 
fine under Linux and Windows.
