What, precisely, do the messages say? If they instruct you to run fsck
manually, do so at the prompt.

During boot, OpenBSD normally does this. If the system previously shut
down properly, it should say something like "filesystem marked clean,
fsck skipped". If the system wasn't shut down cleanly, then it won't
be marked clean, and fsck should automatically be run (possibly
stopping if it hits a severe error, thus prompting you to run it
manually).

vmstat(8) might be what you want.
