ok, this sounds promising.  the method i suggested was just off the top of
my head.  i have to use etrn though, that's not a choice for me sadly.
will dsmtp work with etrn?  does the dsmtp mailer suffer from the
"queued for four hours" warning message issue?  i just did a quick
search on google and didn't find much in the way of docs...  nor did
the sendmail README help.  grrr...

but a brief look seems to show a better chance for success - at least
i have something to play with.
