Haven't thought too much about how you load the kernel, but if it doesn't
find a disklabel, it should ask for root. And a custom kernel can be told
to use ext2fs as root.
Until they fix GRUB or some other bootloader, this might be a little hard.
You could netboot, or use a floppy.
