X11 & HiNote VP Laptop

This is using a Neomagic video card.

I have set up the X server correctly, and it loads into X OK, however once 
in X, I can move the mouse, but cannot load any applications or select any 
of the windows (i.e. xconsole, or pager)

If I try to run xf86cfg (graphical config tool) it loads halfway into the 
application, and as it is about to draw the buttons, the X server locks up.

The only way to reboot is to ssh into the machine and shutdown -r the machine.

ctrl+alt+backsp doesnt kill the server.

Has anyone else experienced this ?
