CD drive disappears upgrading to 3.0

I have a client with a box running 2.9 installed from CD and we need to
upgrade to 3.0.

I thought it would be a snap whether I chose the upgrade path or the
flush and install way. We have all the /etc stuff saved offline and the
config is documented.

Problem is that the 3.0 CD install "sees" a phantom sd0 that times out
(of course) and no cd0.

appended are the 2 dmesgs, any clues on a way out?
