I'm ba-ack!
I'm not sure the snapshot floppy image has changed. It certainly gave
the same result and I'm sure it is the same rev as the CD one but I'll
verify that shortly.

I changed the CD drive to a Mitsubishi Diamond and then 3.0 installed
just fine.
I then had another problem. PPPoE.
Using the same files in /etc/ppp that i had before (except the ipf and
ipnat lines) I ended up with tun0 with an mtu of 1500 even though the
ppp.conf called for mtu and mru to be 1492.
If I did:
ifconfig tun0 mtu 1492
the client (winboxen) could send email but not get it from the remote
pop server.
Under pressure from a busy client at days end I replaced 3.0 with 2.9
and copied the /etc and /etc/ppp back and it worked as before.
I have more to discover........... I have no idea why a ppp.conf with
mtu and mru of 1492 doesn't get those settings to work on 3.0 as it
does on 2.9
Maybe I need to restart my coffee habit... ~ | ^
