resolv.conf problems

Ok here is my problem. Whenever I have a resolv.conf present in my etc
it takes forever for everything to connect to my machine. Even like
route show take like 5 minutes to show the routing table. All I have in
the resolv.conf is my two nameservers provided by my isp.
 
Uni #cat /etc/resolv.conf
 
nameserver 208.xxx.193.21
nameserver 208.xxx.167.195
 
They are correct ip's. I am not running a DNS server locally. Is there
something else I need to put in the resolv.conf? I barley remember
having to do this on another machine. Can't remember what I had to do to
fix it.
