APC Ups, non-serial connection

Just wanted to know if somebody out there is using any kind of non-
serial connection to your apc ups? I have the SNMP Management card,
which sends info to its configured nodes to shutdown etc on various
power events. This works just fine with Windows etc.

There is a client software for Linux, however, complete with a not-
so-neccessary installer which requires X. Furthermore requires Java
VM to run. I really don't want all that running on my FW.

So, any ideas, besides dumping the traffic and start writing my own
upsd?
