processor heating in standby (apm -S)

Strange apm problem with a Dell Inspiron 7500, obsd 3.0, XFree v4;
using 3Com 575 cardbus NIC.

With X running and only a couple of xterms, no xscreensaver or other
shenanigans, do apm -S. Hard disk and monitor shut down gracefully.
After 15-20 minutes of silence, the fan comes on, which is a rarity on
this box. Investigation reveals quite a lot of heat accumulation near
the processor. Touch a key, it springs to life; the NIC recovers
fine, and within a few minutes, the unit cools and the fan goes off.

BIOS has a processor speed setting, and I've tried both 'automatic'
(defined as 'max speed when on AC'), and 'max performance' (defined as
'start max at boot, let software change speed'). Those sound
backwards to me, but neither has any effect on this reproducible
behavior.

Tried capturing 'top -d 1' every 5 seconds to see what's shakin', but
it halts when standby is initiated (as it should), yet the processor
certainly seems to be doing ... something.

'xset dpms force off' won't work, or I'd just use that (all I really
want is a dark screen).

dmesg is attached, if it's of any use.

Cheers -d
