First of all, thanks to those who replied and tried to help me.
I have solved the problem, in a way...

I was running the tests on an openbsd system running in vmware and that
seems to have been the problem all along. Pppd does not like being run
in a vmware system. When I tested my connect scripts on a normal system,
it ran like a charm, no dropped packets or anything.

In other words, no more pppd woes :)
