Well, you have not said what audio source you are using. I have very
similar hardware and after a system boot all inputs and outputs are muted.

Did you un-mute the inputs as well as the outputs?

I set the following in rc.local

inputs.dac.mute=off
inputs.cd.mute=off
outputs.master.mute=off

Thereafter cd audio and/or xmms work fine and the volume buttons on the
laptop work as expected.
