Tips for searching the archives

Could somebody please point me to some tips for searching the email
archives.

As an example, I would like to see what folks have written about sendmail.
I plug that in as the search criteria and the first 50 items that pop up are
all from 1995 to 1997.  So, I decide I would like to search just this past
year.  I clicked on "Restrict matched files", highlighted "March, 2002"
through "March, 2001" and found... nothing.

That's bizarre, because if I browse the March 2002 archive, I found 30 or so
references in the subject lines.

So, I turn to you for some tips...
